About the institution
Sichuan University West China Hospital / School of Stomatology began in 1907 as the Chengdu Renji Dental Clinic and is widely described on its official site as the birthplace and cradle of modern Chinese stomatology. In 1917 it established China's first higher dental school (West China Union University College of Dentistry). After successive renamings and the 2000 merger of West China University of Medical Sciences with Sichuan University, it became Sichuan University West China Hospital (School) of Stomatology in 2001.
According to its official introduction, it is China's first specialty dental hospital, among the first Grade-A tertiary dental hospitals, a National Center for Stomatology, and a national clinical research center for oral diseases. The school reports top rankings in China's discipline evaluations for stomatology (including first place / A+ in Ministry of Education assessments cited on the official page).
